How can chinampas be used to restore wetlands?
Freshwater Chinampas |
Traditionally, chinampas have been used to grow food crops on raised beds within a wetland ecosystem. This application is appropriate in freshwater wetlands surrounding New Orleans. We cover the benefits of this traditional use in the Agricultural Benefits section of our website. |
Brackish Water Chinampas |
We also see potential in using them in a non traditional way - to rebuild and repair brackish water wetland areas by planting them with native species. While chinampas were traditionally used in wetland ecosystems for growing food for the surrounding communities, we are proposing that chinampas could also be used to restore brackish water wetlands. While food could not be grown on the beds of these types of chinampas, they could be used to replant indigenous species of the wetlands to restore the land mass and vegetation. |
